Type Locality and Naming

After the Baras Ridge, Mount Malguzar. N.D. Zlenko in 1951 (I.A. Kim et al., 1995). Stratotype is the same.

Synonym: Barasskaya Tolsha, Baras Beds, Baras Fm, Барасская т.


Lithology and Thickness

Micritic-sparitic limestones, sometimes crinoidal, gray, dark gray, poorly bedded. Thickness: 300m.

Overlain stratigraphically by terrigenous formations of the Tamchisay Fm and Kurpin Fm.

Contains foraminifers - Parathurammina ex gr. suleimanovi Lip., Tuberitina bulbocea Gall. et Harlt., Planoendothyra spirilliniformis (Brazhn. et Pot.) of the Serpukhovian stage and Profusulinella ex gr. ovata Raus., P. ex gr. cylindricaSolov. and others of the Lower Moscovian substage; conodonts - Idiognathodus cf. oblinguus Kos. et Koz., I. cf. podolskensis Coreva, I. cf. incurvus Dunn., characteristic of the upper part of the Lower Moscovian substage. Fusulinidae; chaetetoids - Chaetetes">Chaetetes cf. pinnatus Sokolov, C. sp. ind., Cyclochaetetes sp. of the Lower-Middle Carboniferous.


Age 

Overall age - Early Carboniferous, Serpukhovian stage - Middle Carboniferous, Early Moscovian stage (Bukharin et al., 1996). Previously, the Baras Beds was dated within the Serpukhovian-Bashkirian; Bashkirian-Lower Moscovian; Serpukhovian-Lower Moscovian. I.M. Nigmatjanov included the Sulyuktin Fm, Akbulak Fm, and Ramazan Fm in the Baras Beds Fm (I.A. Kim et al., 1995). In the legend (Bukharin et al., 1996), the Baras Beds Fm is distinguished within the Serpukhovian stage-Lower Moscovian substage and includes the previously independently distinguished Tailan Fm, forming the watershed part of the Malguzar Mountains (Borisova et al., 1962).
